Named after Benjamin Franklin, the town of Franklin, Georgia, embodies many of the values of its historical namesake, making it an attractive real estate market for families and businesses seeking to live or work in West Georgia.
Franklin is the county seat of Heard County and prides itself on its small-town values and working-class history. In its early settlement days, Heard County was home to cotton farmers who had discovered that the area’s rocky soil was better suited to textile crops than food crops. When cotton farming became less profitable, local farmers turned to forestry. Today, timber is still a dominant force in the local economy with more than 160,000 of the county’s 192,640 acres devoted to the timber industry. Other agricultural activities, including beef cattle and poultry production, remain part of the area economy, as do manufacturing and power generation.
Franklin is conveniently located along and near Georgia Highway 100, Georgia Highway 34, and U.S. Highway 27, all major transportation routes through Georgia and the Southeast. These highways provide access to three major interstates: I-85, I-185, and I-20. The cities of Carrollton to the north and LaGrange to the south provide opportunities for employment and business development. The area is convenient to air transportation as well. Most of the county is within an hour’s drive of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The Chattahoochee River flows through the county. The area’s accessible transportation routes offer many opportunities for commercial development in Franklin and Heard County as businesses look for space to build or expand near the Atlanta metropolitan area.
