What is an MLS?

What is an MLS_

Kellie and Jay were having dinner with friends when they mentioned they might be ready to stop renting and buy a home. Their friend, Bennett, immediately suggested they check out DuffeyRealty.com because if a home is listed on an MLS in West Georgia you can find it on Duffey Realty’s website. Kellie and Jay looked at each other in confusion, and then asked: “What is an MLS?”

If you’ve never purchased a home before, you may have never heard of the real estate listing services known as the MLS. The abbreviation stands for Multiple Listing Service. An MLS is a clearinghouse through which member real estate brokerage firms regularly list real estate properties. Cooperating brokers in an MLS exchange information on real estate listings and share commissions with members who locate purchasers.

In the early days, an MLS was printed and shared. Today, it’s all conveniently online. According to the National Association of REALTORs®, there are more than 800 MLS databases. For those with homes for sale, an MLS offers increased exposure to the property for sale. For buyers, the benefit is working with a single real estate agent to search for properties in their desired location and price range.

At DuffeyRealty.com, you can search three MLS databases: West Metro Board of REALTORs® MLS, Georgia MLS, and First Multiple Listing Service (FMLS). One advantage of our site is that if a property is listed in two or more MLS databases, you should only see it once in your search results. Our goal is to simplify your search process and allow you to spend more time on the listings that interest you most.
