Happy Birthday to the Leapers!
Way back in Roman times, the New Year began on March 1. When Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar in 46 B.C., his advisors estimated one year to be 365.25 days. Since the end of February was the end of the year, they added an extra day at the end of that month to account for those extra hours. (To read more, go to science.howstuffworks.com.)
Since then, Leap Day has become a day laden with superstition, possibilities, and a bit of fun. For example, according to Irish folklore, St. Brigid made a deal with St. Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years on Leap Day. In contrast, the Greeks consider it unlucky for couples to marry during a leap year and especially on Leap Day.
For the estimated 5 million people worldwide who have a Leap Day birthday, this year is a rare occasion to celebrate their birthdays on the actual date. For those lucky folks, there are all kinds of discounts and freebies to help them celebrate their once-every-four-years event. Here are just a few we found:

Great American Cookies is offering one free Individually Yours Cookie Cake to people with Feb. 29 birthdays. All that’s needed is a valid ID or birth certificate to verify your birthday.
Leaplings Eat Free.
Hard Rock Café customers with Leap Day birthdays receive a free entrée from the restaurants special menu with a valid photo ID.
All Leap Year babies will receive a free freshly baked cookie on their birthday at McAlister’s Deli restaurants nationwide. Just show your ID.
Grab a coupon on the Olive Garden Facebook page for four free desserts for your Leap Day birthday. The coupon can be printed or shown on your phone.
The College Football Hall of Fame & Chick-fil-A Fan Experience in Atlanta will help Leapers celebrate their birthday by offering free admission with a valid ID on Feb. 29. Guests can get “two tickets for $29” to join the fun.
