Franklin is the county seat of Heard County and prides itself on its small-town values and working-class history. In its early settlement days, Heard County was home to cotton farmers who had discovered that the area’s rocky soil was better suited to textile crops than food crops. When cotton farming became less profitable, local farmers turned to forestry. Today, timber is still a dominant force in the local economy with more than 160,000 of the county’s 192,640 acres devoted to the timber industry. Other agricultural activities, including beef cattle and poultry production, remain part of the area economy, as do manufacturing and power generation.

The cities of Carrollton to the north and LaGrange to the south provide opportunities for employment and business development. The area is convenient to air transportation as well.
